Riga railway junction is the main railway junction in Latvia, connecting the railway with the seaport on the Baltic coast. The most intensive traffic is carried out in the following directions: Riga - Tukums, Riga - Jelgava, Riga - Aizkraukle, Riga - Sigulda.
Since 1976, the Department of nodes and stations of "Lengiprotrans", in addition to master plans of stations, began to develop master plans of industrial sites - factories, depots, construction industry enterprises and other facilities. At this time, a project was developed for a cargo yard in the Riga railway junction.
