In 2020, at a meeting between the Governor of the Kostroma Region and the General Director of Russian Railways, an agreement was reached on the technical re-equipment of the Kostroma station complex.
The design documentation was developed by Lengiprotrans JSC in 2021 under the leadership of the chief architect of the project for the industrial and civil buildings and structures department K.A. Balykina.
The main innovation is that the station in Kostroma has become a single transport hub, combining the railway and bus stations. The number of passengers it receives has tripled to 2.4 thousand people.
According to the project, the architectural and town-planning appearance of the station was completely updated, modern interiors were made with author's finishing elements and lamps in all passenger public areas: waiting rooms, a hall of increased comfort and a hall for passengers with children. Navigation and visual information systems have been installed, the entire complex has been adapted for people with limited mobility, and a center for assisting passengers with limited mobility operates on its territory. The vital activity and functioning of the station complex are provided with modern engineering systems.
The forecourt and the platform are landscaped with green spaces, the sidewalks are paved with concrete large-format tiles in three colors with dynamic lines. To protect from bad weather and the sun, author's canopies are equipped on the platform. Throughout the territory there are modern park lamps, benches and trash cans.
The grand opening of the Kostroma station complex after a large-scale renovation took place on June 9, 2023.
