The Danilov - Vologda - Konosha - Arkhangelsk railway line is a section of the Northern Railway. The road was built in the second half of the 19th century: the Vologda - Danilov section was commissioned in 1872, and the Vologda - Arkhangelsk section - in 1898. The lines were supposed to provide communication between the central and northern regions of the country, as well as foreign trade through the Arkhangelsk port.
In the late 1930s, the need arose to strengthen the railway line. To this end, the specialists of Lentransproekt (since 1951 - Lengiprotrans) have developed a project for the second tracks.
Design and survey work was divided into 2 sections: the southern section Danilov - Konosha and the northern section Konosha - Arkhangelsk. The technical design of the southern section was completed in 1937, and the northern one in 1938.
When designing this line, it was necessary to take into account the fact that it was originally built for a narrow (meter) track. Then the line was changed to a standard track, but the subgrade and some of the artificial structures remained unchanged.
Due to the fact that most of the line passed through swamps and the subgrade was partially laid along slates, it was not possible to fill the second track in the same body with the first when designing in these areas. During the operation of a single-track line, deformations of the subgrade and the superstructure were constantly observed.
