The Ilyinsk — Krasnogorsk — Uglegorsk railway line is a projected section on the territory of South Sakhalin and is part of the Far Eastern Railway (Far Eastern Railway) system. The route should solve the problem of coal transportation.
Back in 1937, the Tomari — Ilyinsk line was built, but World War II prevented its continuation north to Uglegorsk.
They returned to the question of construction in the 1970s. Thus, in 1975–1976, Lengiprotrans expedition conducted surveys and prepared a feasibility study. Also, recommendations were developed to strengthen the railway on Sakhalin Island. In subsequent years, the Department of the Far Eastern Railway carried out the reconstruction of the railway track on the sections, taking as a basis the recommendations of the institute.
The working conditions were unusual in terms of the geographical, topographic, climatic and natural conditions of the island. Among other things, the facility was unique in that a broad Russian gauge (1520 mm) railway operated in the north of Sakhalin, and a narrow Japanese gauge (1067 mm) in the south.
However, the construction started was not completed. The problem is still urgent, its solution is planned within the framework of the development strategy of the coal industry of the Sakhalin region until 2020.
