Railway line Kostroma - Galich - a section of the Northern Railway. The idea of its creation arose back in the 19th century. The plan was started immediately after the end of the Great Patriotic War by the decision of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR on November 22, 1945. The route was supposed to provide the exit of the Kostroma region, formed in 1944, to the country's railway network.
In 1946, according to the project of "Lentransproekt" (since 1951 - "Lengiprotrans"), construction of the line began, which lasted for 10 years. During this period, the institute carried out additional work on tracing the diversion of dirt roads, power lines and sewerage in the city of Kostroma, as well as aerial photography at the Galich station for the design of traction facilities, power plants and a working village.
In 1953, a design assignment was developed for the development of the Galich station with the construction of a revolving depot on it.
In 1956 the Kostroma-Galich railway was put into operation. The line provided an exit from Kostroma to the Northern Railway, which played an important role in the socio-economic development of the city.
