Babaevo is an out-of-class railway station on the Vologda — St. Petersburg line of the Oktyabrskaya Railway. By the nature of the work, the station is a precinct one, and by its volume and complexity it is extracurricular. In 1990–2000, Lengiprotrans in several stages developed a project for the reconstruction of the station in view of an increase in transit freight traffic along the Volkhovstroy — Koshta line.
In 2000, a project was issued for the reconstruction of the station with the joining of traction current types as part of the title for the construction of the second main track of the Volkhovstroy — Koshta section with its electrification. Electric centralization of the station allows to receive electric locomotives of direct and alternating current by changing the type of current in the contact network. Direct current flows on the Tikhvin — Babaevo section, and alternating current on the Babaevo — Koshta section.
In 2006–2010 two schemes of the station's receiving and dispatching fleet were developed: using longitudinal and transverse types of track development. The increasing flow of trains in the direction of the Ust-Luga port under construction showed the expediency of using the longitudinal type.
