The Bui - Vologda railway line is part of the Northern Railway. In the early 2000s, Lengiprotrans developed a project for second tracks on the site in order to increase the throughput of the East-West transport corridor. In addition, the line has a direct impact on the increase in cargo traffic at the Ust-Luga sea trade port.
The complexity of the design and construction of the facility was due to the presence of weak soils at the base, a shortage of soils suitable for filling in the embankment, and the lack of road access. Since the need to solve the problem existed for a long time, all work was carried out in an extremely short time.
Simultaneously with the construction of the second track, its electrification was carried out on alternating current. Measures were taken to develop systems for signaling, centralization and blocking devices, two-way automatic blocking of ABTC-EM was installed on both paths.
